Freedom Of Speech and Social Responsibility

I think that in the context of Singapore’s multi-racial society, we should adopt Szilagyi’s view of placing more emphasis on social responsibility. The world we live in is shared by many people and if we do not have mutual respects for one another, the world would be an unfeeling one, with everyone treating one another aggressively. The reason that we are now living in a society where there is no religious conflict is due to everyone respecting one another. Legal action would be taken upon a person making a negative remark about a religion. If there were no such laws, we will still experience riots and strikes today, just like what was commonly seen in the 1960s in Singapore. It does not only involve two people when a religious remark is made. It affects people of the same religion in the country and even the rest of the world. Taking the cartoons published by the Danish and Norwegian newspaper, depicting Prophet Muhammad as an example. The publication angered Muslims all around the world, especially in the Middle East, where there are mass demonstrations, diplomatic rows.

If freedom of speech is allowed in many countries, there will not be any possible solution to end the problem and it will aggravate. This will then cause a new negative remark to be made on another religion. The same mass demonstration will happen in another part of the world, turning the whole world chaotic. There will be no end to this vicious cycle of people insulting one another. I agree that freedom of speech is an essential foundation to democracy, but that should only be completely allowed when everyone has the respect to one another. Whenever we make any comments, we should put ourselves in others’ shoes and think of how we would feel if we were to be in that position. Therefore, for freedom of speech to be adopted by the many different countries, the people should be educated on knowing what to say and what not to say. Only then, we will be able to attain freedom of speech and social responsibility.
